Photoshop love + resources

for you from nirrimi curve by Nirrimi Hankinson

modern things curve by Julia Trotti

One of the things I have loved about blogging is that it has helped me get back in touch with one of my first loves photography. I first started out in photography when I was little and my Dad taught me to use his old Minolta SLR, then I moved to the darkroom and at uni I finally got into digital, but again I'm back to what I love best, film photography.

Although I do almost all my photography in film, I do still do some very simple and quick editing in Photoshop. I try not to do too much touching up because the beauty of film is in the imperfections, but when I do my favourite tools/resources are...

Curves:  Hands down my favourite! If you haven't heard of curves or never used them before they are the quickest way to give a touch up to a photo, from minor brightening/contrast to a full vintage wash.  And what is even better is that there are some super talented photographers out there you can get curves from if you are time poor like me or don't really know where to start with creating your own.

My favourite resources for curves...
// The Colour Shop:  by Nirimmi Hankinson
// Julia Trotti:  Julia has a whole selection of free curves on her blog.
Instructions on how to use and install curves found here.

Other favourite editing tools:
These are my top most used tools in Photoshop, a quick search of the Adobe website help (or even google) will give you a video tutorial!
// Spot Heal:  After scanning this tool is great for removing little bits of dust and scratches.
// Dodge & Burn: My favourite tool and reminds me of being in the darkroom!
// Levels: This is a must for getting your true white and true black, again a tool that reminds me of being in the darkroom using filters.
// Lens Flare: I love lens flare! better if you can get it naturally, but I have added the occasional artificial one.

Good resources...
// Adobe ANZ FB page:  Great for links to tips and tutorials on how to do different effects in Photoshop for the newbie like me.
// Pugly Pixel:  One of my goals this year is to learn to make more collages and graphics for my blog. Pugly Pixel has a huge collection of cute graphics specifically for blogging.

So how do you like to edit your photos? any favourite resources/curve sites/tips? Do share!....

Secret Squirrel Art Class

Secret Squirrel's A/W 12 collection, Art Class

Melbourne based artist Ainslie Fletcher was employed to create the prints in the collection. Her hand-painted designs (which were then digitally reproduced and printed onto the fabrics) were influenced by the aesthetic of modernist artists Paul Klee and Anni Albers, native American Indian handcrafts and quilts and quilting techniques, and became the main source of inspiration for the range.

read and interview with Ainslie on the Secret Squirrel blog here.

Love this lookbook shot by Anabela & Geoff of Fieldguided for the new Scout & Catalogue spring collection. The shoot was done on both film & digital but I love the film photos the best. I basically love everything Anabela turns her hand to, such a talent!

PS. We have just gotten a whole bunch more of the Fieldguided totes in the shop after selling out of the first lot.
